Bantry Bay offers some of the most
spectacular and least known dive sites in Irish waters. A
wide range of shore dives, wreck dives and boat dives are
available for novices as well as the most experienced divers.
At Hungry Hill Lodge
we have a 12 CFM air compressor so we can provide all your
air requirments as well as offer you the local dive information
that you may need.
Amongest the dive sites available
locally are:
1. Zetland Pier/Sheelane Island:
The area around the pier is suitable for snorkelling and there
is a small sandy cove for the non divers. Depths of up to
10 - 14 metres are ideal for novice divers. The attraction
for more experienced divers is Sheelane Island, which is 800m
offshore. At the western end of the island is a small outlying
rock with a lovely open cave to explore - depths of up to
30 metres.
2. Sandmount Stand: Ample
parking - enter from shingle strand. Depths of up to 16 metres.
See wrasse, dogfish and huge scallops. Lovely snorkelling
and a lovely place for a picnic.
3.Bardini Reefer: (Wreck
dive, boat required) This ship is in 15 metre of water and
sank approx 20 years ago. It is easy to find as its masts
are visible above the surface. The wreck is almost complete
and its shallow depth means lots of bottom lime. Lots to see
and an ideal wreck dive for both novices and the more experienced.
4. The Dogs Rock: The Dogs
Rock is at the eastern end of Bere Island and you cannot miss
it as there is a mast mounted on the top of the rock. Many
wrecks in this area including the Reggio (a steamship wreck)
and The Syren (a Dreadnought Destroyer) Reefs and gullies
with depths of up to 40 metres.
